Each of these 2 dressers were about to be literally thrown
away in the dump when I just happened to be in the right
place at the right time and rescued them. Both had over 25
coats of paint on them, as you can see the thickness on the
top of the brown one, and had damage that I was able to
repair, refinish them and dress them up with authentic
hardware.
Here is a gorgeous
quartersawn oak
fireplace mantle that
someone painted over
bought from an
architectural salvage
store, refinished, and
replaced the old one in a
Victorian fixer-upper. I
can never comprehend all
the beautiful antique
wood that gets covered
up with paint.
Here is an original 1930 arched-top mahogany front door that had a
southern facing exposure. It took a beating in constant sunlight, drying it
out, cracking, staining, and fading; but the wood was sound enough to
withstand a refinishing. It was stripped, scrubbed with solvent, poked,
gouged, scraped, sanded, filled, stained and coated with 5 coats of
protective spar urethane. Now the rich lustre of the red mahogany is
beautifully restored.
